History of Yo! MTV Raps
August 6, 1988
When Yo! MTV Raps debuted on MTV it changed the world. Back then Rap music was an underground genre of music.Yo! MTV Raps brought the culture of Rap to the mainstream at a time when hip-hop and black culture were still being ignored by music television. The show was a lively mix of Rap videos, interviews with stars, live performances and comedy, hosted by Doctor Dré, Ed Lover and Fab 5 Freddy.
Run-DMC hosted the pilot episode in the US. Also featured in the pilot were DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince and Eric B. & Rakim.
Making Rap large
The style, the trends, the language of Rap began to influence popular culture. By the time the show left the air in 1995, the genre was no longer underground. Yo! MTV Raps has been mentioned in songs by EPMD, Ice Cube, MC Hammer, LL Cool J and Eminem. Rap music has grown to being the biggest and most popular genre of music today, and a lot of this is due to Yo! MTV Raps.
